The Red Hat Society hit the UK 7 years ago. Since then it has gone from strength to strength with new chapters registering every week. At the last count there were nearly 80 chapters in England, from Penzance to Pontefract, and most places in between; one chapter in Wales, some in Glasgow and Edinburgh and some in Ireland. The Red Hat Society was started in America by Sue Ellen Cooper, based on the well known poem 'Warning ' by Jenny Joseph . Sue Ellen bought her best friend a red hat and a framed version of the poem. Her friend liked it so much, she did the same for other friends and so it came about that they had formed a 'club' of Red Hatters.
The idea of finding time for fun and frivolity after fifty has great appeal for those of us who have spent so much time looking after the needs of others. A sisterhood of friendship, giving love and support for the little girl inside us all. The society grew quickly in America with chapters in every state from Hawaii to Alaska, and on over the border into Canada. There are over 40 thousand chapters world wide in countries as diverse as Sweden, Russia, Spain, China, Holland and Australia. Most have been started as a result of seeing a group of red hatters out and about. The sight of a group of ladies of a certain age dressed up in red hats and purple outfits having lunch or tea and just enjoying themselves is a very compelling reason to want to be part of that. It has also provided a wonderful opportunity to meet ladies from all over the world who have a common bond. Wherever you plan to visit, at home or abroad, you will be assured of a warm welcome from your red hat friends. Please note that this website is still in development so please be patient!
